The right size transforms a room. Use this guide to choose a rug that fits your space and anchors your furniture beautifully.
Rug sizes at a glance
- Accent (2×3 – 3×5 ft): entryways, bedsides and small spaces.
- Area (5×8 – 6×9 ft): seating areas, smaller living and bedrooms.
- Large (8×10 – 9×12 ft): the most versatile size for living and dining rooms.
- Oversized (10×14 ft and up): grand living rooms and open-plan spaces.
- Runner (2.5×8 ft and up): hallways, kitchens and stair landings.
- Round & Square: round tables, reading nooks and symmetrical rooms.
Room tips
- Living room: the front legs of your sofa and chairs should sit on the rug — an 8×10 or 9×12 works in most rooms.
- Dining room: choose a rug large enough that chairs stay on it when pulled out — usually 24 inches beyond the table on all sides.
- Bedroom: a large rug under the bed with 18–24 inches showing on each side feels luxurious.
