This grand-scale antique Western Anatolian carpet crafted within the celebrated Oushak weaving tradition—is an extraordinary textile of monumental artistic and historical significance. Grounded in a wide, open ivory field, the composition features a central vertical axis anchored by an elongated diamond medallion in terracotta coral, flanked by stepped saffron gold medallions above and below.

The unusually spacious open ivory field enhances the architectural scale of the composition, allowing the elongated medallion and pseudo-Kufic-inspired borders to command visual attention while maintaining exceptional balance, elegance, and a remarkable sense of lightness. This restrained composition is one of the defining characteristics that distinguishes the finest Western Anatolian decorative carpets.

Highlighting its rare collector status, the central medallion encloses a finely drawn band of stylized pseudo kufic calligraphic motifs, echoing early Islamic talismanic inscriptions. The spandrels at the field corners display stylized palmettes and stepped floral cornerpieces in terracotta and muted sage, providing an architectural frame while maintaining a luminous, airy spatial aesthetic.

Hand-knotted with silky, hand-spun Anatolian wool, the carpet’s defining feature is its majestic primary border system. Drawing inspiration from early Ottoman decorative traditions associated with Lotto and Holbein carpets, the principal border displays an monumental pseudo-Kufic calligraphic script in saffron gold over a muted olive-sage ground. The angular, interlocking Kufic-derived glyphs create a powerful graphic border that elevates the textile from floor covering to a highly collectible decorative textile. An outer guard band rendered in terracotta coral with delicate rosettes completes the expansive perimeter.

The carpet exhibits a beautifully worn, low-shorn wool pile that enhances its soft, ethereal sheen. Over more than a century, the natural vegetable dyes have faded into an ultra-coveted, harmonious pastel palette with gentle abrash across the cream field and golden calligraphic borders. The soft construction and broad 10’11” x 15′ dimensions give it a gracious, relaxed drape while laying flat and stable on the floor.

Interior Designer’s Recommendation:
The open ivory field, warm terracotta accents, and rare pseudo-Kufic borders make this palace-sized Oushak carpet an unbeatable anchor for grand living rooms, formal dining halls, or modern architectural spaces. This carpet pairs naturally with:
* Venetian plaster, limestone cream, warm terracotta, or warm greige walls
* Wide-plank European oak, light ash, or honed travertine marble flooring
* Mid-century modern bouclé seating, antique gilded consoles, or plush velvet sectional sofas
* Modern minimalist chandeliers, unlacquered brass accents, or large-scale contemporary abstract art
Its grand 11′ x 15′ proportions easily anchor a complete main seating group or a 10-to-12-seat dining layout. Because of its light-reflective ground and rare calligraphic history, it effortlessly bridges classic European elegance with high-end modern minimalism.
