This new Persian Soumak rug, woven in the Rafsanjan region, is a charming example of flat-weave artistry featuring a playful and primitive pictorial design. The midnight navy field is populated with rows of colorful human figures, stylized deer, and geometric shrub motifs. Unlike typical knotted rugs, this Soumak uses a “wrap-weave” technique that creates a smooth, durable surface on the front while leaving a protective shaggy texture on the back, making it exceptionally sturdy for its thickness.
The craftsmanship highlights the tribal heritage of Southern Persian weavers, who use these small-scale designs to tell stories and represent the natural world. Each tiny figure is unique, rendered in a bright primary palette that pops against the dark background. The rug is framed by a complex “barber pole” inner border and a wider geometric outer border, showcasing the weaver’s precision in maintaining symmetry across a flat-weave structure.
Due to its compact dimensions and durable flat-weave construction, this rug is an ideal choice for an entryway, a kitchen, or as a decorative accent in a child’s bedroom. The tight weave is resistant to snagging and very easy to clean, making it a practical option for high-traffic spots. Its whimsical design and saturated colors bring a sense of handmade warmth and folk-art character to any corner of a contemporary or traditional home.
